Published 8th Dec 2023

The South Pacific is known for its glorious beaches, sweeping forests, and world-renowned hiking trails. Tourists come from all over the globe to walk the hiking trails in destinations like Fiji and Tahiti, as a way to fully immerse themselves in the island’s natural beauty and appreciate the breathtaking views on offer.

At Spacifica Travel, we love to showcase what makes the South Pacific such a special region of this planet, and its array of memorable hiking trails are proof of its spectacular beauty. Let’s take a look at some of the best hiking trails throughout some of the South Pacific’s most popular holiday destinations – whether you’re an experienced hiker or just want a relaxing stroll through these mesmerising islands, there will be something for you.

Hiking Trails in Fiji

Fiji is home to so many amazing hiking trails, that it’s impossible to mention them all in one article. Instead, we’re going to highlight some of our favourites that you should absolutely include as part of your itinerary for your next Fiji holiday.

  • Mount Batilamu - a moderately difficult hike that takes you to the top of one of Fiji’s tallest mountains for a view that will stay with you for a lifetime.
  • Tavoro Falls - an easy hike that takes you to a trio of waterfalls, some of which even have their own swimming holes for you to soak off mid-hike.
  • Lavena Coastal Walk - as its name suggests, this easy hike takes you alongside the incredible volcanic coastline of Taveuni.
  • Viti Levu Cross-Island Hike - if you’re an experienced hiker up for a challenge, then this multi-day trek across Fiji’s largest island is sure to deliver a memorable experience.

Given how stunning Fiji’s natural beauty is, you can’t go wrong with any of these wonderful hiking trails.

Hiking Trails in The Cook Islands

While there are a few hiking trails to choose from during your Cook Islands holiday, there is one that towers over them all: the Cross-Island Trek. This is a long, difficult trail that is full of scrambles and steep inclines.

However, with hard work comes a truly indescribable lookout where you can choose to climb to the top of the Needle (Te Rua Manga) or simply make your way back down the mountain. The Cross-Island Trek involves water crossings, natural ladders created by tree roots, and lots of amazing views.

Certainly one hike you will never forget.

Hiking Trails on Norfolk Island

Norfolk Island is dotted with relaxing bushwalks that immerse you within the island’s beautiful native flora and fauna. The Summit Track is a favourite amongst many on their Norfolk Island holidays, as this 1.3km easy-moderate trail rewards you with some breathtaking views. For those looking for a more challenging trail, the Mclachlan’s Lane & Bridle Track is a stunning 7.6km journey that explores some of the more rugged areas of the island.

Hiking Trails in The Islands of Tahiti

The Islands of Tahiti are known for their rugged terrain and towering mountains, ensuring they have some of the most exciting hiking trails in all the South Pacific. For your next Tahiti holiday, make sure you spend some time walking to the Ma’raa Caves or the Waterfalls of the Papeivi Valley. The best part of going for a hike in the Islands of Tahiti? It’s serene hiking weather all year round.

Hiking Trails on Lord Howe Island

The most famous hiking trail on Lord Howe Island is the climb up Mount Gower. This trek has long been considered as one of Australia’s best walks and is a challenging 14km hike that can take upwards of 8 hours to complete.

If you want a less strenuous hike during your Lord Howe Island holiday, then you can enjoy the Mount Eliza hike or Old Gulch – both of which are under 1km and which takes you to a secluded lookout.
