Fiji Animal Experiences

Swim with Manta Rays in Fiji

Swimming with Manta Rays in their natural environment is a truly awe-inspiring experience. You can tell you’re witnessing something incredible as these massive, gentle creatures glide effortlessly below you. There are few places in the world where you have the opportunity to actually do this activity. Mantaray Island is one of those rare places. The island is surrounded by a designated marine park internationally recognised as a refuge for the Pacific Manta Ray.  During the months of May and October you can partake in a snorkelling trip to see these magnificent creatures up close as they glide majestically through the nutrient rich channel. Conservation of the species is a top priority in Fiji so you can be assured that the tours are carefully planned and run in a way that allows the Manta Rays to carry out their normal behaviours without disruption.

Dive/Snorkel with Sharks in Fiji

On the fringes of Beqa Lagoon, the Shark Reef Marine Reserve was created to study the resident shark population and in turn aid in the long-term conservation of sharks worldwide. It is here, within Shark Reef Marine Reserve, that The Shark Dive takes place. Divers can observe and interact with some of the oceans top predators and a multitude of fish species.
For the non-divers there is the option to snorkel with reef sharks at Kuata Island. Head out on a day trip to the island and to Moyia Reef, home of the White Tip and Black Tip Reef Sharks. A safety brief is all that separates you from an extraordinary experience. These sharks are spectacular and majestic and not the kind that very occasionally bite people. The White tip and Black tip reef sharks are like the poodles of the shark world. They are stunningly graceful creatures and will change your perception about sharks forever.

See Newly Hatched Turtles in Fiji

Sea turtles are the animal most commonly associated with Fiji with their waters boasting 5 of the 7 living species of sea turtles: green, hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, and olive ridley. The first 3 of these species also nest in Fiji from October to April every year. Some of the Mamanuca Islands are known as nesting sites for the turtles and if you visit them at the right time you may be able to see them, at a distance of course, in their natural habitat. If you’re unlucky enough to miss a beach sighting, three resorts in the Mamanuca Islands keep baby turtles safe until they get to a particular size, before being re-released into the ocean. You can see them up close at Treasure Island, Vomo Island and Mana Island Resort.

Hold an Endangered Fijian Iguana

Kula Eco Park is Fiji’s only wildlife park and the only endangered species breeding facility. Situated in an area of coastal forest, it’s home to a range of birds, reptiles, frogs and other animals – and like any good wildlife park, it will let you have a close encounter with some of its more famous inhabitants. One of which is the Fijian Iguana, endemic to just 3 of Fiji’s islands with 98% of the population living on just one island. The iguanas are a brilliant green with three white stripes and a distinctive crest along the length of their back. Be sure to have your camera ready to record the moment you were able to get up close and personal with some of Fiji’s more unique fauna.

Fiji Bird Watching

Bird watching in Fiji is a popular activity, due to its large variety of birds, including 27 species that are indigenous to Fiji and can be found nowhere else in the world. The Fijian islands where you are most likely to glimpse the largest number of birds are Viti Levu, which is home to 56 of the 81 known species found in Fiji, Taveuni and Kadavu. The larger islands tend to have more and vaster areas of nature that are untouched by humans, which makes the larger birds, mostly the parrots and pigeons, more easily visible. Bring your binoculars and either head out on your own or with a guide to spot Fijian birds such as the reef heron, Kadavu mask parrot, Pink-Billed Parrot Finch, Golden Dove and Silktail.
