Norfolk Island's Unmissable Treasures

It’s undeniable that a place like Norfolk Island has many hidden gems! Situated just off the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand, this little slice of heaven is often overlooked. Perfect for a tropical getaway, Norfolk Island is a well-kept secret in the South Pacific! Keep reading for some of the hidden ‘treasures’ that a holiday to Norfolk Island has to offer.

Emily Bay Lagoon

Situated on the southern side of the island, Emily Bay Lagoon is picture perfect. With Instagram-worthy turquoise waters, contrasting against the white sand, there is no better place to relax. The water is clean and crystal-clear, but most importantly – safe for swimming and snorkelling. Set against the classic Norfolk Pines, there is no other location on the island that perfectly encapsulates Norfolk quite like this one!

Saint Barnabas Chapel

With stunning traditional architecture, Saint Barnabas Chapel is not something you would expect to see on an island. With a rich history, the old church features stained glass windows and other delightful architectural designs. Visit the chapel as a part of a tour, or on your own. Either way, it is a hidden treasure of the island!

Mount Pitt

If you’re after panoramic views of the island, then Mount Pitt is your place! In the central-northern part of the island, you will find a mountain with stunning 360-degree views. Bring your own picnic and use the picnic tables there for a meal with a perfect view. Mount Pitt is 320 metres above sea level and completely accessible by car. It also provides a pretty stunning view for both sunrises and sunsets alike!

Puppy’s Point

While we are on the topic of sunrises and sunsets, the western side of Norfolk Island has the perfect spot. Puppy’s Point has it all: picnic spots, steep cliffs overlooking the rugged coastline, a variety of native trees and many local eateries. There is no doubt about it – you won’t feel freer than when you have the wind in your hair from Puppy’s Point!

The Local Art Gallery

Find many hidden treasures at this gem! Featuring paintings and art pieces made by Norfolk Island locals, the gallery is open every day of the week except for Monday. Give watercolour painting a go, or even take a lesson and take your very own stunning artwork home. Perfect for picking up souvenirs, the Local Art Gallery is a must-see!

Phillip Island

While technically it’s not ‘Norfolk Island,’ Phillip Island is just six kilometres south of Norfolk. Infamous for being a ‘birdwatcher’s paradise’ it has thousands of migratory birds calling it a temporary home every year. Free from predators, Phillip Island is home to many endangered species and stunning rare plants. With captivating scenery, including red, yellow and pink soil- there is no place quite as unique as Phillip Island.

Slaughter Bay

Despite its name being a little misleading, Slaughter Bay is one of the island’s most peaceful spots. Rumoured to have got its name from the Old English word meaning ‘slow moving water,’ Slaughter Bay is full of stunning coral reefs and rocks. This bay is truly the image that comes to mind as soon as you think about the South Pacific. Perfect reefs, lots of flora and fauna and stunning beaches!

Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area

Norfolk Island’s very own World Heritage site, the Kingston and Arthur’s Vale Historic Area is the perfect showcase of Polynesian history and culture. Being recognised as one of the best surviving instances of larger-scale convict settlements, the site features stunningly preserved Georgian buildings. Also featuring the Norfolk Island Museum and Norfolk Island Research Centre, there is no shortage of information to take in at this site!

Bumboras Reserve

Officially known as Creswell Bay, the Bumboras Reserve is the perfect location for swimming and fishing in rock pools. The bay is a favourite local surfing spot, where you can watch them for yourselves from the stunning boardwalk. Gaze out onto fresh, rolling green hills and crystal-clear waters while taking in the stunning South Pacific beauty and fresh air!

No matter what you are visiting the South Pacific for, there is something for everyone. Adventurers, solo travellers, and families: Norfolk Island is the perfect destination. Make sure to check out these treasures on your next visit!
