Suggested Itinerary*:
The mainland of New Caledonia is 400km long and a self-drive tour will provide a fascinating contrast of scenery: niaouli plains and expansive farmland on the west coast and lush vegetation with an impressive coastline on the east coast.
Day 1:
Arrival in Nouméa, depending on flight arrival time, time for city centre visits. Overnight at Nouvata Hotel.
Day 2:
Head to Pouembout for a short hike on Plateau de Tia to take in the panoramic view over the area and ocean. Then visit the Cultural Centre of Pomemie (Kanak exhibits). Overnight at Hibiscus Hotel, Kone.
Day 3:
Head to Voh to walk on the Gatope Beach, visit the coffee Ecomuseum after which you can fly over the heart of Voh on a ULM (microlight/helicopter). Overnight at Malabou Hotel, Poum.
Day 4:
Visit the Koumac Cave, the Mines of Tiebaghi and enjoy a lunch and afternoon on Ilot Tiam Bouene. Overnight at Malabou Hotel, Poum.
Day 5:
Reach the far North of New Caledonia, walk on the Nenon beach, and drive to “Boat Pass”, the northern extremity of the mainland with views on the Beleps Islands. Visit the St Denis church, the first catholic church of New Caledonia. You could stop at Association Djowero to learn how to carve mountain rocks. There are two waterfalls along the way: Cascade de Tao & Cascade Colnett. Head south to take the last ferry boat of New Caledonia joining the road between the north of the mainland and Hienghène. Overnight at Koulnoue Hotel, Hienghène.
Day 6:
Visit the Cultural Centre of Hienghène, reach the viewpoint over the Sphynx and Hen (rocks in front of the Bay), walk on the “500 francs bill” beach (this beach used to be on the 500 francs bill), and stop along the Linderalic Rocks in Hienghène. Overnight at Koulnoue Hotel, Hienghène.
Day 7:
Visit the Twaé Corridor, a rock formation dug by water and at the end of which flows a waterfall. Then enjoy the Tibarama islet for a relaxing lunch and afternoon (short boat ride). Overnight at Tieti Hotel, Poindimie.
Day 8, 9 & 10:
Return to Nouméa and enjoy your last two days to visit its bays, city centre, cultural centre. Overnight at Nouvata Hotel.
