Discover Pitcairn Island

A hidden bounty of opportunity, a haven for lost travellers...

In 1790 a small band of Europeans and Polynesians watched as their connection to the outside world went up in flames. HMAV Bounty was burning, set alight by mutineer Mathew Quintal.

The twenty-eight settlers on lonely Pitcairn Island had to make the most of their new home, in spite of friction and isolation. Ultimately, the survival of this rare culture relied upon the islanders’ resourcefulness, kind moral code and sense of community responsibility.

In 1856 the entire Pitcairn Island population relocated to Norfolk Island, though small groups of homesick islanders returned to Pitcairn in 1858 and 1864. Under their care the island once again flourished with productivity, and the Pitcairners continued to share their amazing legacy with the wider world. Those travellers onboard passing ships have glanced briefly at life on Pitcairn - with a handcrafted souvenir to prove it – though the true Pitcairn experience has been the privilege of few.

As the island opens itself up to share with visitors, it presents an opportunity of a lifetime: travel which is authentic, unique, historic and inspiring. The multi-skilled owners of the homestays are exceptional tour guides, cooks and historians, and with gardening, bee keeping, carving, cooking, tapa cloth making, fishing, domestic chores, family life and much more, no two days are the same on this industrious little island. With quad bikes and 4 wheel drive vehicles as the main means of transportation and electricity available only between 7.00am – 10.00pm, Pitcairn Island is a true escape from a busy world, a fulfilling respite for any world-weary traveller.

Frequently asked questions about travelling to Pitcairn Islands

Here are some common questions to assist you in the planning of your upcoming holiday

  • What is the culture of Pitcairn Island?
Pitcairn Island was settled by mutineers from the English ship HMS Bounty, and the Tahitian women they took there with them in 1790. There are less than 50 permanent inhabitants on the island today, but they keep the blend of English-Polynesian tradition alive through weaving, farming practices, and language.
  • How do I get to Pitcairn Island?
Spacifica Travel has packages including all the transportation needed for your Pitcairn Island journey. The travel and isolation are what draws many seasoned expeditioners to Pitcairn’s shores. From Australia you fly (usually via Auckland) into Papeete in Tahiti. From there you take a domestic flight to the island of Mangareva, where you jump on a short ferry to the village of Rikitea to board the Silver Supporter cargo ship for the 32 hour crossing to Pitcairn.
  • How do I get around Pitcairn Island?
Once on the island there are no 'roads' by the description you might be familiar with. Instead, transportation is mostly done by 3 or 4 wheel off-road buggy or bike. A truly unique experience for a unique destination!
  • What is the weather like on Pitcairn Island?
As a relatively small land mass weather systems pass the island quite frequently without lingering. This means that rain comes and goes throughout the year with no defined 'wet season'. The average daily temperature is also very consistent at 18 to 23 degrees across the seasons. The westerly winds can make the winter months feel a little bit cooler.
  • What language is spoken there?
English is the main language on Pitcairn Island but the locals, many years ago during settlement of the island after the HMS Bounty, also created their own language. It is called 'Pitkern' and is a blend of Tahitian and Old English, and is still in use by locals today.
