Is Samoa how Fiji used to be? Fiji or Samoa

Published 21st Dec 2022

Thinking about a trip to Fiji or Samoa? Let the team at Spacifica Travel help you decide which destination to choose!

Pristine beaches, rugged rainforest, friendly locals, and the freshest food! More than ever before, we want connection, authentic experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. So close to home, yet a whole world away.

We have always known the gem of the South Pacific Fiji has it all – or does it have too much?

Wind back 20 years and Fiji was an exotic paradise full of winding dirt roads, roadside stalls, villages, dense forests to explore, beachside bures and not a single kids club in sight!

Today we see mega resorts, multiple airport terminals, high-rise buildings and fast food chains – we love Fiji for all it can offer – but what if you are after an alternative cultural experience where you can eat and drink with locals? Or sleep under the stars in a beachside Fale? Why not Samoa?

Samoan Holidays

Samoa has more to it than you may know, and is incredibly affordable to visit. With regular flights across multiple airlines, Samoa is also easy to get to!

Fly into the main island, Upolu, home to Samoa’s capital city, Apia. On Upolu, you’re spoiled for choice in terms of accommodation. Maybe you would like to stay local and experience the historical past of the European Settlement? Spend the night under the stars in a traditional fale or treat yourself to a little luxury in an overwater bungalow (Yes! Samoa has those too!). Visit mystical waterfalls and the famous To Sua Ocean trench? Visit cultural villages, cave pools, or go diving in the marine reserve!

Maybe nightlife is more your thing? How about a traditional Fia Fia night of dancing, eating and partying with locals! Or go straight out to the islands of unspoilt Savai’i  by self-drive on ferry to Salelologa where you can hike, swim with turtles, see the famous Alofaaga Blowholes and immerse yourself in island life at the Salelologa Markets.

There are so many hidden gems in Samoa, we just know you’ll love it.

How does Samoa compare to Fiji?

Where do we start? A Fiji holiday is full of secret magic hidden throughout.

If off-the-beaten track is your style, discover the Island Groups of Yasawa & The Mamanucas.

Spread out over 40(ish) separate Islands, these are not to be missed when Fiji, we promise you.

By day you can swim with Mantarays, explore natural caves, cruise remote isolated beaches, fish for large gamefish or stop at Cloud 9 for a drink and a woodfired pizza!

From experience, not much can beat a cheesy hot woodfired pizza in the ocean, far from shore after hours of snorkelling and sunbaking.

The islands can be reached by Helicopter, Cruise, Seaplane or Watertaxi – something to be said for years of tourism visiting the islands, it sure is easier to get to now!

Fiji or Samoa? They each have such rich history, friendly locals, beautiful beaches, and unique one-of-a-kind experiences. So why not visit both!

Fiji Airways fly from Australia via Fiji to Samoa most days of the week - nothing like seeing both countries in one holiday and not having to decide!
