Lord Howe Island Restaurants

Published 15th Jan 2019

There are a number of reasons people visit Lord Howe Island, the pristine natural beauty, wildlife, location and the history – but what you don’t hear as much about is the food! There are plenty of dining options to enjoy during your stay, so here are a few of our favourite restaurants and dining suggestions.

Anchorage Restaurant

Owned by Earl’s Anchorage and centrally located on Ned’s Beach Road is Anchorage Restaurant, a popular dining option for both tourists and locals. The restaurant does café style breakfast and lunch, has an onsite bakery and an ever-changing dinner menu not to be missed! Head Chef David Chlumsky uses fresh produce from the local markets in all of his meals, but also has a private aircraft to import anything that he cannot source on the island. The restaurant is fully licensed, caters for functions and events, and is ideal for groups travelling together.

Arajilla Restaurant

Arajilla Retreat is an all-inclusive spa retreat and home to the delightful Arajilla Restaurant, where you can enjoy world class modern cuisine made using premium ingredients. The Head Chef Ben Crompton and his team know the importance of using fresh local produce! The Chefs bake their own bread, use organically grown vegetables and herbs from the kitchen’s garden and take advantage of the abundance of fresh fish readily available on the island. Arajilla Restaurant is the perfect option for anyone looking to immerse themselves in a culinary adventure, while staying on Lord Howe Island.

Coral Café

Located at the Lord Howe Island Museum and Visitors Centre is the Coral Café, open 6 days (Sun-Fri) for cooked breakfast and fresh healthy lunch option and 3 nights a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) for dinner. Coral Café is fully licenced, so diners can enjoy a glass of wine or beer with their meal. Like most restaurants on the island, dinner reservations are essential and transport home is provided.

Greenback Eatery

A premium fish restaurant, specialising in a unique version of farm to plate or as they call it, a “hook to cook” dining experience. Using freshly caught local produce cooked to perfection, this is unforgettably delicious dining experience.  Greenback Eatery is very popular and bookings are essential. Owners Dave and Glenys alternate between buffet options or set menu dining depending on the night and alcohol can be purchased or diners can BYO.

Lord Howe Island Bowling Club

For casual, relaxed dining the Lord Howe Island Bowling Club is a great choice. They offer pub style food at a reasonable price and have a very popular “pizza night” every Saturday. Due to the relaxed atmosphere the Bowling Club is a popular choice for both locals and tourists, make sure to book in advance.

Sunset Bar & Grill

Sunset Bar & Grill is located at Lord Howe Island Golf Club. On Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights the Bar & Grill offers a selection of main meals, many of which come with self-served salad buffet and every Tuesday Night they host a fundraising Fish Fry. As the name suggests, the sunset is spectacular, there is also a fully licenced bar and complimentary transportation home.

Beach BBQ’s & Self Catering

While there are plenty of delicious options to dine out, Lord Howe Island offers lots of self-catering facilities as well. Most properties on the island are apartment style with kitchen facilities or there is the option of using a communal beach BBQ’s. Visitors can arrange to have fresh fish delivered to their accommodation or buy supplies from places like Thompson’s General Store. If you do like to self-cater, keep in mind that a lot of  items are imported and therefore can be more expensive that buying food at home.

Lord Howe Island Restaurants

Most restaurants and properties in Lord Howe Island do offer evening restaurant transfers, but if you are close enough to walk, don’t forget to pack your torch as there are limited street lights!
