What is the Lord Howe Island Marine Park

Located nearly 600 kilometres off of the coast of New South Wales, the Lord Howe Island Marine Park covers approximately 465km of reefs, islands, and ocean. The landscape of the marine park is made up by an enormous underwater extinct volcano, that the very tops of form the Lord Howe Islands.

This World Heritage Listed area is well known for its abundance of marine species that have made the area their home. The marine park hovers in between tropical and cooler waters, and as such the natural environment is a unique mix of the both.

It is a distinct and beautiful environment and is a hugely valuable attraction for travellers to the area.

What Makes Lord Howe Island’s Marine Park So Special

Lord Howe Island is home to a mere 350 people, and only lets in just 400 tourists at any one time. This distinct lack of crowds has ensured the integrity of this natural environment. The coral reef is plentiful and small and big fish thrive in abundance - making sure you are going to have one of the best snorkelling experiences ever.

The converging currents also mean that the marine park is one of the most individual environments in the world. There are over 500 species of fish and sea creatures and 90 species of coral in this park, and the sheer size of it means that there are new discoveries all the time.

The marine park also houses the world’s southernmost coral reef, and is a very environmentally sensitive location.

If you are planning a trip to Lord Howe Island, you should take as much advantage as you can of the marine park’s abundance of activities

The clear and open waters of the area, as well as the unique and varied geography make the marine park one of the best places to scuba dive. Scuba diving is great for people of all abilities so no matter if you just want to stay in the shallows or head further out, you will have a great time.

A lot of these tours will also give you the opportunity to snorkel at more distant locations that you may not be able to swim to. The guides will also be able to give you some interesting information and answer your questions which can be very helpful for those a little curious.

The marine park is also a great place if you are keen to try some underwater photography and videography. As mentioned, the fish are not easily spooked, meaning they are great subjects for any photos and videos you would like to take.
