Travel Guide to the Cook Islands

Published 4th Jul 2024

Nestled in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean, the Cook Islands offer a perfect blend of natural beauty, Polynesian culture, and laid-back charm. From pristine beaches and vibrant coral reefs to lush rainforests and welcoming locals, the Cook Islands promise an unforgettable tropical escape filled with ease. In this travel guide, we'll explore everything you need to know to make your Cook Islands holiday with Spacifica Travel the best that it can be.

Passport and Visa Requirements for Australians

For Australians planning to visit the Cook Islands, a valid passport is required with at least six months of validity from the date of entry. Fortunately, Australian citizens do not need to obtain a visa for stays of up to 31 days. However, if you plan to stay longer, you may need to apply for an extension or visa renewal. Middle names are not required for hotels or flights at this stage, but with immigration needs subject to change it is recommended to reconfirm this closer to booking.

Travel Insurance

While the Cook Islands boast a relatively low crime rate and health care facilities and doctoral training from New Zealand, travel insurance is still recommended to cover unexpected emergencies, medical expenses, and unforeseen cancellations. Ensure your insurance policy includes coverage for activities such as snorkelling, diving, and hiking, which are drawcards for tourists.

Currency and General Cost

While the Cooks have their own unique currency, the main local currency used is the New Zealand Dollar (NZD). Most major credit cards are widely accepted, but it's a good idea to carry some cash for smaller purchases and transactions like the markets. ATMs are available on the main islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki, but they may not be as readily available on the outer islands.

As for general costs, you can expect to spend around 50-100 NZD for a mid-range meal, while the night markets and local takeaway shops can be great choices if looking to stick to a budget for food.

How to Get There and How Long to Stay

The main gateway to the Cook Islands is Rarotonga International Airport (RAR), which receives direct flights from Sydney and Auckland out of the southern hemisphere. Flight duration is around 6 hours from Sydney and 4 hours from Auckland.

Once you arrive in Rarotonga, inter-island travel to other islands, such as Aitutaki, is possible via domestic flights with Air Rarotonga. Domestic flights operate multiple times per day between Rarotonga and Aitutaki, with flight durations of approximately 50 minutes.

When planning your itinerary, consider spending at least a week in the Cook Islands to fully experience its beauty and charm. However, if time permits, a two-week stay allows for exploration of an outer island or two while allocating time to the state of utter relaxation that the Cook Islands naturally imbues.
