Wellness for the Body

MOVEMENT

There are a variety of ways to get your body moving while enjoying a stay on Rarotonga. One of our favourites is to attend a yoga and wellness retreat at Ikurangi Eco Retreat, where you can partake in professionally led programs surrounded by lush gardens with views of the mountains. It’s bliss!

If yoga is your style but you want to try something different, why not give SUP Yoga a try? Using the stand-up paddleboard as your mat, the combination of seated poses and sun salutations on water will take your workout to the next level.

Don’t forget about the hikes on offer either. With a vast mountainous interior, Rarotonga has a number of freely accessible hiking trails for the beginner right through to the advanced. Raemaru Track and the Takitumu Conservation Area are highly recommended for a few hours spent in nature. If you want to challenge yourself then join Pa’s Cross Island Trek tour that takes you from the North coast, across the rocky interior and Te Rua Manga (The Needle) and down to the South coast.

Looking for something a bit more unique? Why not ask about the local Ura Fitness classes? You can move your body, work up a sweat, and all while learning dance techniques from the local Cook Islanders. It’s trickier than it looks, be prepared to shake those hips!

FOOD

After all that movement you will need to nourish your body, and there is an abundance of healthy and delicious food in this island paradise. For some affordable local delicacies check out the Punanga Nui markets – fresh drinking coconuts (basically a cure for many of life’s woes), rukau (island taro leaves cooked in coconut cream), and ika mata (raw fish with lemon and raw vegetables in coconut cream) are bountiful. For a more substantial meal you should book a table at Nautilus Resort’s Restaurant. The award-winning beachfront dining here offers a quintessential experience with the Polynesian-European fare being from their own local and organic garden where possible. They cater to Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy Free and Gluten Free requirements as well so you can be sure there is a delectable dish for everyone.

PAMPERING

To keep the body rejuvenated you need to pamper yourself a little too! Check out the INCREDIBLE award-winning Waterfall Spa at Rumours Luxury Villas Resort & Spa where their signature Vichy Shower Treatment will leave you relaxed yet invigorated.

For a take home treat, be sure to check out Rito Cook Islands for luxurious cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, soaps, tamanu oil, and other skincare products.

Wellness for the Mind

Wellness for the mind can come from learning, and there is plenty of history and culture to learn about here. Consider a Cultural Village visit to either Te Vara Nui or Highland Paradise for an in-depth look back in time to traditional Maori life, or learn about the island’s people, geography, and legends on the Raro Safari 4WD tour. This fascinating place has deep significance to Polynesians across the Pacific.

Mental wellness can also come from switching off – and there are plenty of ways to do that here! With 32km of coastline on Rarotonga alone there are plenty of near-empty beaches for you to spend the day on, letting your cares and thoughts drift out to sea.

Wellness for the Soul

The soul is fed through experience and growth, and the Cook Islands have that on offer too! Here are our soul-enriching experiences that will have you heading back home with a full and happy heart:

  • Visit Aitutaki – flying over the lagoon is enough to give you a sense of the immense beauty of this ‘almost atoll’. Once you begin cruising the waters on your way to One Foot Island you’ll see just how the shimmering shades of blue can remind you of the beauty that exists in this world and how we should be grateful for it
  • Progressive Dinner Tour – the people we meet in a new place are often the reason we hold such fond memories of it, and the Cooks are no exception. On the progressive dinner tour you visit and dine at island homes with the local hosts, giving you a chance to experience gastronomy ‘Kuki’ style but also get to know who they truly are. You will make lifelong friendships sharing laughs and stories with friends on this tour.
  • Explore the wild landscapes and endemic wildlife of Atiu – this hidden gem has been crafted by mother nature to be surrounded by a makatea (volcanic coral). This raised coral bed provides access to limestone cave systems that were underwater for thousands of years and are now very significant to the culture of the local people, as well as being a sacred burial site and home to the native Kopeka bird. This experience is unlike anything else and is truly an experience that will stay in your soul forever.
